Will Braces Affect How You Speak?

by Republic Dental & Orthodontics | Apr 1, 2021 | Orthodontics

Will Braces Affect How You Speak

Many people have a lot of questions and concerns when they first get braces. Braces are a big deal and bring a lot of change with them. You may be afraid that braces will affect not only the way your mouth feels, but the way you do a lot of your normal activities, as well. For example, will braces affect how you speak? Here are some things you may need to know about braces and how you might feel with them.

When You First Get Braces

When you first get braces, they will likely affect how you speak to some extent, because they might feel new and strange in your mouth. A lot of patients describe them as feeling “bulky.” They may feel awkward under your lips when you smile and talk. It may feel uncomfortable at first, but be reassured that your mouth will grow accustomed to them with time. After a while, most patients often forget they are even there, because their mouth has adjusted so well. The good news in answer to the question “Will braces affect how you speak?” is, not always!

Take it Easy

The best thing you can do while your mouth adjusts to your new braces is to take things easy. Don’t be hard on yourself if things feel strange for a little while, this is a lot to get used to! It can take a little bit of time and patience to adjust to any big change, and that’s perfectly normal! Taking it easy will reduce the amount of irritation that develops and how much braces affect how you speak in those early days.

What Else Can You Do?

If you’re looking for ways to help ease the adjustment period, it’s a great idea to talk to your orthodontist and ask for suggestions that may be helpful. Your orthodontist may provide you with wax to apply to areas of the braces that seem to be extra irritating to your cheeks or lips or suggest an over-the-counter numbing ointment typically used to treat canker sores.

Your orthodontist may also have dietary recommendations for those first couple of weeks. Reducing the amount of chewing you need to do can be helpful or consuming cold smoothies or puddings may offer some cooling relief while also providing nourishment.

It’ll Be Worth It

If you’re feeling apprehensive that braces affect how you speak, take heart that it’s very temporary, and it will be worth it. If you’re having an extra tough time in the beginning, know that it’s normal, and don’t hesitate to reach out to your orthodontist for tips as you adjust.
