What is Gum Disease?

by Republic Dental & Orthodontics | Oct 1, 2020 | Dental Hygiene

What is Gum Disease

“What is gum disease?” you may wonder after a chat with your dentist. A term that ecompasses a variety of situations and needs, gum disease is also common, affecting almost 1 in 2 adults in the United States alone. That number goes up even more for older adults as well. So even if you don’t currently have gum disease, it can be wise to read up on what to look for, how to treat, and when to see a dentist!

Basic Terms:

Gingivitis: The most mild form of gum disease which can be treated with impeccable hygiene and regular chats with your dentist.
Periodontitis: A more severe form of gum disease that may require seeing a specialist. Symptoms can include swelling, loose teeth, bone loss, among other symptoms.
Periodontist: Specialist who works with gums and gum tissue to help treat gum disease.

What to Do

If you suspect you are experiencing gum disease, with early signs like gums bleeding or swollen, talk to your dentist right away. Find out what you can expect, and what steps you can take now to address your gum needs. Keep up with regular oral hygiene, as this is usually the first step in treatment. Ask your dentist’s office if there are ways to help prevent and treat early gum disease.

When to See a Dentist

When in doubt, make a call to the dentist’s office, and bring a list of symptoms and effects to help your dentist better assess the situation. Know that a dentist can help with the root problem (plaque) by helping to clean your mouth and teeth, or to propose another treatment plan if one is needed. Don’t be afraid to show up with questions to ask your dentist about how to proceed.

Call our Pleasanton, San Antonio, TX, dental office to make an appointment with a dentist who may be able to help you find out more about this topic, and improve your oral health.
