How to Care for Your Smile in an Environmentally Friendly Way

Did you know that there are adjustments you can make to your oral hygiene routine that can help the environment? Well, it’s true! If you are interested in caring for the environment while caring for your teeth, then your dentist, Dr. Espino, and dental team recommend that you do the following things:

-Turn off the tap: There is no need to keep the tap running while you brush your teeth. So, after you soak your toothbrush, turn the tap off so you can save water.

-Recycle your toothbrush: After you’ve used your toothbrush for three to four months, it’s time to replace it. But, instead of throwing your brush in the trash, try using it for something else. For example, you can use your worn-out toothbrush to clean the toilet, clean your computer keyboard, or paint a small object.

-Say no to microbeads: Some toothpaste brands tend to have colorful microbeads to add a little shine and sparkle to the toothpaste. These microbeads tend to get stuck between your teeth and gums. In addition, when the microbeads are washed down the drain, they are inserted into rivers and lakes. Then, the fish mistake these pieces for food. If they eat these beads, the fish and other animals can die. So, it’s best to avoid using toothpaste that has polyethylene.

-Consider using compostable tools: Your toothbrush and floss don’t have to pile up in a landfill. You can use biodegradable products made of silk, corn-based plastic, and wood.

If you do these things, you will be on the right track toward improving your oral health as well as your environment.
